What is creasing and folding?

Well hopefully one of these you will be familiar with, but the other perhaps not? Folding is the process of simply “folding” paper to make it into different shapes, usually in half or into 3rds. Creasing goes hand in hand with folding as it’s also termed as a “score”. It’s a folding aid often used on heavier papers to help the paper fold efficiently and neatly.

On thin paper you can fold it with your hands, we all know this is easy right? But have you ever tried it with cardboard, or thick paper? Has a mind of it’s own doesn’t it! This is where creasing is important. When customers require flyers to be folded they have often been guilty of forgetting to add a crease. Flyers are printed on a 300gsm board and as such are quite thick, when you try to fold them it’s usually the case that you get an uneven fold and it usually cracks and tears down the fold.

Take a look at the example image below. You can see the edge tears and becomes unattractive and looks cracked. Scoring eliminates this and in the event that you don’t have them folded by us, easier to fold yourself aswell!

You can then easily fold your work into many different styles, some different to others and some very difficult and requiring the use of a professional folding service and machine. Below is a picture outlining some of the popular folding methods used and how they are folded and also some recommendations as to what to use each particular folding method for!
